| 51 What are trigger points? Trigger points are small, hardened knots in the muscles – usually noticeable as pressure-sensitive points. They are caused by overexertion, poor posture or lack of exercise and can cause pain that often radiates to other parts of the body. Trigger points usually develop gradually – through repetitive movements, stress or incorrect strain. The affected muscles are less well supplied with blood, harden and begin to ache. What is particularly insidious is that trigger points often cause so- called referred pain, i.e. discomfort in areas that are not the source of the problem. For example, a trigger point in the neck can cause headaches, while one in the buttocks can radiate down into the leg. How trigger point massage works: Trigger points can be released with targeted pressure.
